In his workshop in downtown Cairo, Ahmed Othman weaves gold threads into black fabric, creating verses of the Koran with them.
Even a century ago, his grandfather’s embroidery adorned the Kaaba of Mecca’s Grand Mosque, and he says he is honored to do it again this year.
“We had the honor of preparing the embroidery of the Kaaba for three consecutive years, in 1924, 1925 and 1926. Today I am continuing the tradition”, says Othman, whose work will be sent by royal caravan to Mecca.
“My grandfather embroidered the decorations of the costume of the king of Egypt, and also the ranks of the military of Egypt, and many Arab armies,” he adds.
Ahmed says that when the Kaaba cloth began to be embroidered in Egypt, people from all over the country were looking for copies or original reproductions.
“But they should have the space to keep the ‘kisva’.” We have offered everyone parts of the kisva or reproductions measuring 70 by 50 centimeters”.
“The measure of the original part that covers the entrance of the Kaaba is 6 by 3 meters, for which some people have space and can buy it,” adds the worker.
