Preliminary data suggest that the cases of the Omicron variant seem mostly mild, said today the head of the task force for the vaccine against Covid-19 at the European Medical Agency (EMA), Marco Cavaleri.
Cavaleri stressed the need to gather more evidence to determine whether the spectrum of severity of the disease caused by Omicron is different from that of all the variants that have circulated so far.
“Only time will tell. “At this stage we do not have enough data to show the impact of the Omicron variant on the efficacy of approved vaccines, but we are constantly monitoring and gathering evidence,” he said.
“Companies trading in Covid-19 vaccines are required to submit laboratory test results to determine the level of neutralization for the Omicron variant,” said Cavaleri, noting that the EMA is ready to act quickly if necessary.
