The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended the use of Paxlovid in the European Union. Paxlovid is a new drug against Covid-19, developed by the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Therefore, in the coming hours, the European Commission will be able to authorize the use of the drug, adding an important new resource to combat the effects of the coronavirus.
Paxlovid was authorized in late December last year in the United States, where it is now regularly used to treat Covid-19 cases, although some problems have arisen in finding it, but its production after the approval of the EMA is expected to increases in the coming months.
Vaccines are today the most important tool to control the effects of the pandemic, so far they have proved essential to reduce severe cases of Covid-19, such as hospitalizations but also deaths.
Medicines such as Paxlovid may still be useful for people suffering from coronavirus, but also for those citizens who due to other health problems can not be vaccinated and consequently are even more exposed to the risks of the disease.
Paxlovid is an antiviral that interferes with the sources used by the coronavirus to multiply within cells in infected people.
Treatment consists of taking 30 tablets over five days of Paxlovid and Ritonavir, another antiviral drug developed long ago against HIV. Ritonavir allows Paxlovid to stay active longer in the body, showing even better results.
Pfizer recently asked the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to apply Paxlovid to Covid-19 for emergency use. Pfizer announced in November that the Paxlovid pill reduced the risk of hospitalization or death from coronavirus effects by 89 percent.
“If the approval of PAXLOVID, as the first oral antiviral drug of this type, designed specifically to combat SARS-CoV-2, it may be recommended for the home treatment of high-risk patients at the first signs of infection“, It is said in the company statement.
To date, all FDA-approved COVID-19 treatments required intravenous injection under the supervision of healthcare professionals in hospitals and clinics.
