Greek Orthodox believers with coronavirus protection measures, maintaining physical distance and wearing masks, have participated in Water Sanctification ceremonies across the country.
But due to the epidemiological situation some rituals have changed, participation has been limited, even in some areas the throwing of the cross into the sea was canceled as well as the customs traditionally performed on Epiphany day.
In Palio Faliro, Athens, Piraeus, there was a young man from Larissa who grabbed the cross and gave his best wishes. “It’s a holiday. Today we celebrate Epiphany. I am very happy that I was one of the lucky ones to catch the cross. I feel blessed. I wish health, happiness and joy to all people “- said Asterios Googuulis.
Epiphany, or “Blessing of the Waters”, celebrated on January 6, is a public holiday throughout the country and according to tradition the person who first takes the wooden cross in the water, will be freed from evil spirits and will be healthy during all year round.
At a time of the culmination of the fifth wave of the pandemic in the country, Greek Archbishop Ieronimos has called on all believers to listen to the voice of the Church and the State and be vaccinated.
