The EU has nowhere to go: Sooner or later, said European Council chief Charles Michel, the bloc will have to impose sanctions on Russian oil and gas.
Michel called on European lawmakers to consider such sanctions, which would target Moscow’s key source of revenue, following reports that “war crimes” had been committed by Russian troops in the Ukrainian city of Bucha. “It proves that Russian brutality against the people of Ukraine knows no bounds.”
“The new coal package includes a ban on coal imports. “And ladies and gentlemen, I think that sooner or later measures will be needed for oil and even gas.” says Charles Michel, president of the European Council.
New and even more deadly sanctions will be imposed by the United States and the European Union on Russia, a move that will increase Moscow’s economic and technological isolation as punishment for attacks on civilians in Ukraine. The joint venture includes measures that whip up financial institutions, ban new investment in Russia, tighten existing sanctions on state-owned enterprises, and on Russian government officials and their families.
This time, they will also hit Vladimir Putin’s two daughters. Katerina, 35, a former acrobat scientist, and Mariyya, 36, an endocrinologist, are on the EU sanctions list, which also includes names of oligarchs, politicians and individuals from Putin’s inner circle. They are expected to be subject to asset freeze and travel ban across the old continent starting today. This time, in addition to the financial market, the Russian technology goods sector is also being weighed, with sanctions on certain categories of products, at a time when many sectors in Russia are now paralyzed.
