The European Union (EU) has announced sanctions against 351 members of the Russian Duma who voted in favor of recognizing the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.
The bloc also decided to convict 27 individuals and entities accused of destabilizing Ukraine, waging a disinformation campaign and providing financial support to the two separatist regions.
The targets of the sanctions are the political, military, business and media sectors, which will be hit by asset freezes and travel bans, which means that people can not travel through EU territory.
“There is a clear escalation of Russian aggression against Ukraine,” EU chief Josep Borell told a special news conference in Paris.
“We are demonstrating our determination by responding strongly to the latest developments,” he added.
The new sanctions package restricts the Russian government’s access to EU capital and financial services.
Trade between EU bands and the two separatist regions has also been banned.
The bloc says it is trying to stop fundraising from Moscow for its military campaign, which has already begun in eastern Ukraine.
“We will make it as difficult as we can for the Kremlin to pursue aggressive policies,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
