The European Union imposed new sanctions on Russia on Thursday related to the war in Ukraine. This step comes after the bloc’s member countries supported a series of measures, including banning the import of Russian gold and tightening controls on the export of some high-tech goods.
European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that strengthening the sanctions and extending them in time sends “a strong signal to Moscow that we will continue to exert pressure as long as necessary”.
There are still no details on the new sanctions as they are expected to be published in the EU’s Official Journal.
Throughout the week, European officials have sought to tighten the broad package of sanctions against Russia, adding a decision to ban the export of gold, in the hope that the measures will have a decisive impact on the war in Ukraine.
EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell said on Monday that at the moment “the most important thing is to stop Russian gold”, the country’s second largest export industry, after energy.
Last month the group of seven of the world’s most industrialized countries (G7) committed to a ban on Russian gold, pointing out that Moscow has used it to sidestep the impact of several rounds of sanctions imposed by the West.
In addition to the restrictive measures, the EU also decided to provide another 500 million euros in military aid to Ukraine./VOA
