EU leaders gathered for a two-day summit in Brussels to negotiate and approve with great difficulty the 6th package of sanctions against Russia.
Despite Hungary’s objections, the union agreed to ban 90 percent of Russian oil imports, that is, 2 in 3 coming from the sea, not including the pipeline used by Hungary.
Now another issue the bloc seeks to resolve is the blockade of 22 million tonnes of wheat in Ukraine. French President Emanuel Macron leaving the summit said he and Chancellor Scholz had asked Vladimir Putin to end the blockade of the Ukrainian port of Odessa under the terms of a UN resolution.
“I proposed to President Putin that we take the initiative for a resolution at the United Nations to give a very clear framework to these operations. “And we are now waiting for Russia to respond to this point while we are in contact with the UN Secretary General.” said Macron.
While the president of the European Council, Charles Michel hinted that the union is also looking for grain transit routes in addition to that from Belarus and the Black Sea.
“There are 22 million tons of grain that are trapped in Ukraine, especially in Odessa, countries like Egypt and other African countries are victims of this situation. “We fully support all the efforts made by the United Nations to find an agreement on the opening of a maritime corridor in the Black Sea, but we have also discussed the various opportunities needed to develop alternative routes.” said Michel.
Meanwhile, the representative of African countries at the summit has warned EU leaders that the blockade of Ukrainian ports by Moscow risks bringing a catastrophic scenario of food shortages and rising prices, which could lead to 282 million people suffering from hunger.
