Today, the European Union flag was raised for the first time in the hall of the Ukrainian parliament, after Ukraine became a candidate for membership in the bloc.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine and the European Union are starting a new chapter in their history.
“115 days between the submission of the Ukrainian application for membership and the response of the European Union is a record short time. We have created an extremely strong foundation that no one can destroy, and on which we can build our European future, our present. Ukraine is struggling to be an independent state in a big family, in a new, free family – the European family. Now our journey to membership does not have to take decades. We have to do this way quickly”.
But in the meantime, in a virtual speech before Ukrainian lawmakers, European Commission President Ursula Avon der Leyen reminded them of their homework, urging them to move forward with anti-corruption reforms.
“Your European path and the reconstruction of the country will go parallel. But the investments will have to be accompanied by a new wave of reforms. Today, Ukraine is the only country in Europe’s Eastern Partnership that has passed a law to break the oligarchs’ control over your economy and political life. And I congratulate you for that. Now you must focus on the implementation of this law”.
Next week, von der Leyen will join international and Ukrainian leaders in Lugano, Switzerland at a conference to raise funds for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
