The European Union (EU) warned Russia on Friday (December 10th) that it would face repercussions if it invaded Ukraine.
The call came as Germany’s new chancellor called for talks to ease tensions after Moscow rallied troops on the border with its south-western neighbor.
“The aggression comes at a price, so we will communicate these points in advance with Russia,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told a joint news conference with Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Ukraine accuses Russia of preparing a large-scale military strike while the Kremlin has denied it is preparing any attack.

Asked if sanctions on Russia could include the closure of the Nord Stream pipeline that brings gas to Europe, von der Leyen said that in general, energy should never be used to put pressure and that the energy security of Europe and its neighbors should be be secured.
Scholz declined to answer questions about the Russian-German pipeline, saying it was clear that the EU and others would react if there was an invasion of Ukraine and that talks to prevent such a thing were important.
Earlier in the day, during a visit to France, Scholz called for the resumption of “Normandy” talks between Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine to resolve the crisis.
Von der Leyen said the EU with 27 member states is ready to impose economic and financial sanctions against Russia, along with other partner countries, if Russia invades Ukraine.
“We want a good relationship with Russia, but it depends first and foremost on how Russia behaves. “Russia is taking a threatening stance towards its neighbors and this undermines Europe’s security,” she said.
