A heat wave that brought record temperatures to countries across Europe is moving further north and east on Wednesday.
Southern Belgium and parts of western and southwestern Germany are forecast to reach above 40°C on Wednesday.
In northern France, hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes after high temperatures sparked fires that destroyed more than a thousand hectares of vegetation in Brittany.
In England, where temperature records were broken on Tuesday, London’s mayor said his city’s firefighters had their busiest day since World War II.
Saddiq Khan told BBC News that on a normal day, fire departments receive around 350 calls, but on Tuesday they dealt with more than 2,600.
In Greece, around 500 firefighters are also putting out the fire in Penteli, north-east of the capital Athens, while the effects of the heat wave continue. Winds over 80 km/h have made it more difficult to control the flames.
Large fires have swept through Italy in recent days, causing the temporary closure of a major rail route between Rome and Florence, Italian media reported.
Scientists say climate change will continue to make weather more extreme and wildfires more frequent and destructive unless governments take decisive action to stop it.
