There is widespread support for Ukraine becoming a member of the European Union, European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas told CNN on Tuesday.
The statement came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on European leaders to “prove” their solidarity with Ukraine a day after signing a formal application to join the European Union.
“No one forgets that democracy was born in Ukraine after young Ukrainians were shot at for waving EU flags on the Maidan. We do not have short memories in Europe. “We know that Ukraine is part of the family and they have an absolutely legitimate right in their application to formally join the European Union.”said Schinas.
He also said that the EU would announce a general protection status for all those fleeing the war in Ukraine that would give them automatic access to EU health, education and shelter facilities. This decision, Schinas said, together with the use of EU funds to buy weapons for Ukraine are “unprecedented steps”.
He told CNN he was confident that when European leaders meet next time, they would decide to step up the process at a pace that would allow Ukraine to join the European Union “soon”.
