President Zelensky made a call on his social media accounts inviting anyone to come and fight “side by side” with the Ukrainians.
The post reads: “Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addresses all citizens of the world, friends of Ukraine, peace and democracy. “Anyone who wants to join the defense of Ukraine, Europe and the world can come and fight side by side with the Ukrainians against Russian war criminals.”
A more detailed post says that foreign nationals are legally allowed to join the defense of Ukraine and that a special division of fighters is being formed, called the “International Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine”.
The Ukrainian leader has previously stressed how the country is left to defend itself.
Western allies have sent weapons and ammunition – but are not putting their ‘boots on the ground’. Ukraine is not part of the NATO defense alliance.
