35 Albanians are being held pending deportation from England to Rwanda to the Colnbrook asylum deportation center near London’s Heathrow Airport.
Arriving in England by dinghy in May, they received notice that the asylum search would be reviewed in Rwanda. Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu interviewed one of them over the phone. Genti is 21 years old. After paying Kurdish traffickers in France 000 6,000 he arrived in England on May 20 seeking asylum. His English dream is turning into a nightmare towards Africa.
MUHAMED VELIU – Genti, what is the situation of you and other Albanians in that deportation center?
GENTI- A small protest is taking place here in the camp over this dispatch flight to Rwanda. We are all gathered there we are staying. We want to not sleep or eat we do not want to take anymore. The whole camp is. There are also people out there who are protesting this work. A good part of me and I got the letters to Rwanda. Thanks to the work that lawyers are doing, they have managed to cancel the tickets.
During the interview Genti raises this concern which Top Channel finds impossible to substantiate.
GENTI- They are giving us medicine to drink. They do not explain to us what this medicine is for. That medicine can be to put us to sleep and when we wake up to be in Africa. As long as our rights were affected what could not happen.
MUHAMMED VELIU- How did you receive the announcement to take you to Rwanda?
GENTI-It was the worst thing. I did not even expect it. Okay if they asked me it would be something else. I just got the confirmation that you are for Rwanda and I was told that they sent all my details there. They distributed them without my approval. So my rights have been affected. For 10 days set there we can fly to Rwanda.
MUHAMMED VELIU- Why did you choose to seek asylum in England?
GENTI- It was the only way to get rid of some of the threats I have in Albania as I owe money to some people in Albania. I took the road to England as a safer place and with the idea that tomorrow the day after tomorrow I could repay the money I owed and be back with my family.
MUHAMMED VELIU- If the British authorities insist on taking you to Rwanda what will you do?
GENTI- I will try by all means not to go. Then if they are going to take me by force then we have nothing to do. This was our destiny.
MUHAMMED VELIU- Have you considered the possibility of returning to Albania not to end up in Africa?
GENTI- In Albania I am killed if I return to Albania. It was a threat to life. So I took the road. It’s the same situation for me. How I went to Africa as in Albania. I claimed England would help me in this matter, but it did not help me.
