The United States has announced it is sending additional military aid to Ukraine, including anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the world to help its people resist large-scale Russian aggression, saying that defending Kiev was essential.
In the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, authorities declared a state of siege until Monday morning after Russian forces entered the city. On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tried to reassure his people that he was in Kiev and urged them to stay in place and resist the Russian attack.
“I am here. We are not giving up weapons. “We will defend our country, because our weapon is the truth, and the truth is that this is our land, our country, our children, and we will defend all of this.”
President Zelensky has joined the Ukrainians, former US Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor told VOA.
“He is committed and resisting, leading his country. “People are supporting him, including opposition leaders, civil society, and obviously the military, which is proud to be led by him.”
Meanwhile, hundreds of anti-war protesters were arrested on Saturday in Yekaterinburg and other Russian cities.
This shows that Russian President Vladimir Putin is losing the war in terms of public information, Bill Browder from the Magnitsky Global Justice Campaign told VOA.
“Now all the major countries have imposed sanctions on Putin and the people in Russia are not happy about that. Protests are taking place in Russia. All of Mr. Putin’s supporters in the West, the people he has paid, are abandoning him. “He is completely isolated now, and even his partner, China, is trying to distance himself from him.”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Saturday that the United States would provide Ukraine with an additional $ 350 million in military assistance to help Kiev defend its sovereignty. Ambassador Taylor welcomed the move.
“These are another $ 350 million in bulletproof vests needed to protect people who are fighting with tanks and air defenses, Javelin and Stingers.”
Pentagon officials say that so far, Ukraine is fighting harder than Russia had predicted./VOA
