The counties and municipalities of the country appear with paradoxical economic indicators in the official data. For example, the region of Lezha was ranked with the highest unemployment in the country in 2020, but in the same year Lezha had the highest percentage of households that owned highly functional devices, including the number of iPads and smartphones.
According to INSTAT, more than 80 percent of households in Lezha owned highly functional devices (tablets, smartphones and iPads) in 2020 at a level 20% higher than the national average. The Covid-19 pandemic spurred unusual multifunctional sales. Isolation at home and restrictions on movement increase the interest in remote communication through smartphones and devices.
More than 60% of Albanian households own devices with multiple communication functions, an indicator which has increased by about 2.9 percentage points in 2020 compared to 2019. The highest increase in the percentage of possession of devices with multiple functions, is registered in Kukës region, with 20.8 percentage points.
Durrës was the second district in the country for the purchase of smart devices, with an increase of 17% of households in 2020. Lezha, Durrës and Kukës are the first three counties with the highest number of households that own IPAD devices and smart phones. On the other hand, Berat and Elbasan have the lowest number of households that own smart devices with 39.9 and 53.4% each.
During the pandemic year, three counties, Tirana, Vlora and Korça, saw a decline in households owning smart devices. For example, in Korça during 2020 over 53% of households owned smart devices, while in 2019 there were 61.4 percent of households that owned them. Vlora marked the biggest drop in households owning iPads and smartphones. During the pandemic year 67.3% of households in Vlora owned equipment compared to 74.9% in 2019.
Computer devices and smartphones experienced unusual sales growth during the pandemic. Distance learning encouraged the purchase of these devices especially by school staff and students. Tablets and IPADs were purchased as the main work and learning tools during the Covid-19 pandemic./Monitor
