Krishnakumar Kunnath, an Indian industry star of the ‘Bollywood’ show, started complaining that he felt cold and sick, before collapsing on stage.
Kunnath has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 53, after a concert on Thursday, causing a wide wave of homage to him.
“His songs involved a wide range of emotions, as he could relate to all age groups,” wrote the country’s prime minister Modi on social media.
Kunnath fell ill while performing at a concert in Calcutta, according to local daily Times of India. After the performance he said he was very cold and wanted to go back to the hotel, writes The Guardian.
But he was rushed to a hospital from a hotel in Calcutta after losing consciousness around 10:30 p.m.
Born in Delhi in 1968, the multi-dimensional singer sang in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali, among others.
Kunnath had started his career in the 1990s with recordings of songs played in Indian films and performed by screen actors.
He then released two albums, Pal in 1999 and Humsafar in 2008.
The singer leaves behind a wife, a son and a daughter.
