Moscow will set up several new military bases in the west of the country in response, as Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said, to NATO enlargement, which Russia fears so much.
“By the end of the year, 12 military units and divisions will be deployed in the Western Military Region,” Shoigu said during a meeting broadcast on Russian state television.
The minister added that the Russian army is expected to receive more than two thousand units of military equipment and weapons. The Russian aggression against the neighboring country, which began on February 24, shocked the whole world and shook the neutrality of Sweden and Finland, which decided to apply for membership in the military alliance, despite warnings from Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has demanded an end to the alliance’s expansion near Russia’s borders, while some NATO allies, led by the United States and Britain, have signaled their readiness to provide security support to Finland and Sweden if Russia tries to provoke, or destabilize them, at the time of consideration of the request.
Countries benefit from NATO’s Article 5 security guarantee, which states that any attack on a member is considered an attack on all members, once ratification of applications is completed, possibly after a few months.
