The Italian government has decided to extend the ban on unnecessary travel between the 20 regions of the neighboring state until March 27, amid fears raised by new variants of the coronavirus.
Italian authorities are trying to take measures to curb the spread of mutations, which are considered much more contagious than the original variant of the coronavirus.
Local officials said the Ministry of Health would step up vaccination efforts, urging regions to use all doses they have, instead of saving for the second dose.
The travel ban inside Italy went into effect shortly before Christmas and was expected to end on February 25, but officials fear easing the isolation measures could result in new cases of infection with the British variant of the coronavirus.
One of Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s first decisions was to restrict family and friends from visiting, saying no more than two strangers are allowed in a house. Although the number of people infected with the coronavirus dropped from 40,000 in November to 15,000 now, the infection rate and the percentage of positive tests has increased in some regions.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic in February last year, 95,718 victims have been reported in Italy, the highest number in Europe after Britain, and the seventh on the world list.
