It started before dawn. An attack on Ukraine. An attack on Europe…
After several weeks, filled with promises by President Vladimir Putin that he would not attack Ukraine, on Thursday morning the first grenades and rockets were fired in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
Within minutes the targets had been hit everywhere. From airports in the west and south to a few blocks of flats in the east. Missiles fired from inside Russia hit the outskirts of Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv.
Soon armored columns crossed the country from Crimea to the south and Belarus to the north.
At an airport no more than 20 miles (32 km) from the center of Kiev, paratroopers arrived while it was still dark, quickly creating a base that could be used to launch attacks in the capital.
Here in Kiev, which has been so calm during the last weeks of this growing crisis, there was shock, fear and panic.
People took shelter underground, formed long queues in supermarkets and banks and in many cases got into their cars and tried to leave, causing blockages. At the Kiev bus station, young people looked for every way to leave.
