The false information that circulated during the Covid pandemic put many people at risk, who often refused to go to the doctor for testing or hospitalization, much less to be vaccinated.
The World Health Organization urges European countries to build structures to combat gossip and false information that is spreading rapidly through social media.
“The WHO European Office has already taken this very seriously. For the first time, we are paying special attention to it and will track it down. “First of all, it is very important to monitor the information that is transmitted, to understand what the rumors are, because the sooner we catch them, the better our chances of dealing with them and addressing them.”says Kristina Salvi, WHO advisor.
False information was spread in many countries and even existed before in health emergencies, but in the Covid pandemic, it took on uncontrollable proportions and this requires urgent intervention for the future.
“The core is the focus of that community that will be involved in any emergency intervention. If you do tests, contact tracking, vaccinations, and the community does not accept this, then you have failed. Here you need to include the core community. At the beginning of the pandemic, we had neither tests nor vaccine, we were having risk communication. People can be engaged to take these measures. “The way we do this is to listen carefully to the citizens, to try to understand their concerns and to build messages based on these concerns.”
Representatives of the Institute of Public Health of the countries of the Region gathered in Tirana to identify gaps and build recommendations for risk communication, including the community.
