Starting from July 1, the imposition of fines on entities that use plastic bags prohibited by law has come into force. Paper bags and plastic bags over 70 microns thick will be used throughout the country.
According to the law, persons who produce, import or market disposable, prohibited bags are punished with a fine of 5 million old lek. In case of repetition, they are punished with 15 million ALL, up to the removal of the business license.
“It’s a good thing that it was done this way because we were suffocated by dirt, garbage, plastic bags, which took our breath away. All of Albania is filled with them, especially the rivers, you have seen them yourself. I used to use several plastic bags in a day. They have all been replaced with paper bags now. It’s too late, but better late than never.”
“I use the clothesline all the time. I don’t like plastic bags.”
“We no longer need bags, these paper ones are more ecological. We drowned in plastic trash. Since June 1st when the paper bags started, I have yet to see a business give me the things I buy with the old money bags.“
“We lived in Europe and only degradable bags are used there. This law should have been taken in time, since the market opened”, the citizens say.
“Since June 1, we have introduced paper bags and these thick ones into circulation. The fine amounts to 5 million ALL as we have heard. Of course we are afraid of fines. We have been checked 2-3 times so far, but they found us okay“, says a seller.
Efforts to phase out plastic bags began in 2019, but were only finalized now.
The goal is to protect the environment, especially rivers and seas, from harmful plastic. On average, over 3 billion plastic bags are used in 1 year in Albania.
