Two senior US officials said Russia had begun withdrawing some forces around the Ukrainian capital, according to CNN spokesman Jim Sciutto.
They said the US was seeing this as a “big” strategic change.
Officials added that this is being hailed as a long-term move, as Russia has acknowledged its failure to advance north.
Earlier, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had decided to “drastically reduce hostilities” around Kiev and Chernihiv.
