A former British military sniper who says he has seen the “atrocities” committed by the Russian military in Ukraine recently claims that Taliban militants in Afghanistan were more capable than the current Russian military in Ukraine.
34-year-old British Shane Matthew adds that the Russian army was “ashamed to see” because they were untrained and without tactical awareness, even loaded with drugs and alcohol on the front line.
The former sniper, who is already on a humanitarian aid mission in western Ukraine, adds: “Sometimes it was a shame to witness that. The Taliban fought much better than the Russians, despite their cause, as they were militarily untrained. “Even if they had a tactical training, they certainly were not using it,” Shane said of his experience.
Matthew, from West Sussex, has previously fought on several British missions and says that now that he is working on the outskirts of Bucha and neighboring Irpin, he has seen Russian soldiers disorganized and defeated by Ukrainian guerrilla tactics.
Matthew adds that in the early days of the invasion Russian soldiers were captured by Ukrainians after believing they were in training in Belarus, but found themselves in the barrage of Molotov cocktails that stopped their advance.
The former military says he has been in Ukraine with medical supplies since the beginning of the month. “Their equipment was old and their supply lines were chaotically organized.”
“The combat capabilities of the units were non-existent and they did not know how to counterattack or retreat under enemy fire.”
He added: “In my 15 years working on the front lines I have not seen so many killings without discrimination, bombings or attacks on non-military targets.”
