The theft of the priceless wines – some of which were more than 100 years old – was regarded by the owners of the award-winning Atrio restaurant as ‘something you only see in the movies’.
It was recently learned that a former beauty queen was the accomplice of the man with many precedents of stealing luxury wines, but this time with an almost incalculable value.
Priscila Lara Guevara, who has represented Mexico in “Miss World” is accused of being the assistant of the professional Constantin Gabriel Dumitru, in their daring adventure in the restaurant of the hotel Atrio, which is located in the medieval center of Cáceres in central Spain.
Atrio’s owners said 45 bottles were taken in the heist late last year, including an “irreplaceable” bottle of 1806 Château d’Yquem sweet wine worth about $400,000.
Co-owner manager José Polo said the 1806 bottle was priceless.
“The bottle is part of my personal history, a part of me, of the history of Atrio and of the citizens of Caceres, of wine lovers all over the world,” he wrote in a letter to the local daily El Pais.
But Guevara and Dumitru, the latter described by the media as a “Romanian-born Dutchman with a long record of wine theft”, were arrested earlier this week while crossing from Montenegro to Croatia, ending their eight-year manhunt. monthly.
The wine bottles are currently unknown, authorities said.
Carmina Márquez, manager of the two Michelin star restaurant, explained how the robbery unfolded.
Miss Guevara appeared at the reception in heavy make-up to book a hotel room on October 27, under the name Mirka Golubic, showing a fake Swiss passport.
Márquez goes on to say that Guevara made dinner reservations for two, even though her companion had not yet been seen.
After dinner the couple had taken a free tour of the famous restaurant’s wine cellar, and had returned to Ms Guevara’s room around 1am.
Guevara then called the front desk to order room service, which Spanish police said was a ruse to allow Dumitru to more easily get to the pantry “either with a copy of the key card or by stealing the card.”
“They spoke English and were polite,” says the manager, describing the daring theft as a movie script.
The couple had left the hotel early in the morning after taking the prized bottles of wine in towel-wrapped backpacks.
It was only much later after examinations of the hotel’s security cameras that the pair were identified as suspects in the theft.
Dumitru was previously arrested for attempted theft of expensive bottles of wine in Madrid and also at Geneva airport.
The Spanish police said that they had cooperated with colleagues from the Netherlands, Croatia and Romania for the investigations, while the couple are waiting for the formal filing of charges and further extradition.
