The image was unveiled this Thursday by the international consortium, which stands behind the Event Horizon telescope. There are a total of eight synchronized radio telescopes worldwide.
Previous attempts had uncovered black holes in the center of our galaxy, but difficult to take pictures of.
It has been difficult to secure the image of this galaxy, as light is known for its chaotic bending and twisting by gravity as it pulls into the abyss along with superheated gas and dust.
Feryal Ozel of the University of Arizona described the black hole as “the soft giant at the center of our galaxy.”
The black hole of the ‘Milky Way’ is called ‘Sagittarius A (star)’, near the border of the constellations Sagittarius and Scorpio. It is four million times more massive than our sun.
This is not the first image of the black hole, as the same consortium released the first in 2019 from a galaxy 53 million light-years away.
The ‘Milky Way’ black hole is much closer, about 27,000 light-years away. A light year is 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion kilometers).
Astronomers believe that almost all galaxies, including ours, have these giant black holes at their center, where light and matter cannot escape.
This makes it extremely difficult to secure their images.
The project cost nearly $ 60 million (49 49 million) to $ 28 million (23 23 million) from the US National Science Foundation.
The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy containing at least 100 billion stars.
Michael Johnson, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, called the black hole “violent but inefficient” and said it was consuming little matter.
