French regulators have fined companies, Google and Facebook, 201 million euros for using the online user tracking mechanism, authorities said on January 6th.
The 150 million euro fine against Google has been issued by the French National Commission for Information Technology and Freedom.
This institution has fined the giant Google with a fine of 100 million euros in December 2020.
“The commission has established that the sites facebook.com, google.fr and youtube.com do not enable users to refuse the use of their data, so easily as to accept this request,” said the regulatory body.
Both platforms have three months to change practices, as France will later impose fines of 100,000 euros per day.
Google has told the news agency, AFP, that it will change its practices.
“In line with the expectations of Internet users, we are committed to implementing the new changes, as well as working with the French Commission following its decision,” the US company said in a statement.
Known as “cookies”, this data mechanism is formed on users’ computers when they visit a page, which allows companies to store information about visiting the site.
This mechanism is very important for Google and Facebook, as a way to personalize advertising – the main source of revenue.
