Charles Michel’s assertions that something good will arrive for Albania and Northern Macedonia seem to have had a concrete impetus. Paris’s proposal to lift the veto imposed by Bulgaria on the membership talks, which everyone is talking about, has so far not been seen by anyone.
It is unofficially stated that he envisages that the demands of the Bulgarian side be included in the negotiating framework of Northern Macedonia and that the EU be the guarantor of their realization.
Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski confirmed that they have not yet received the French proposal, but said he highly appreciates the efforts of the current EU presidency and President Macron himself to reach an acceptable solution for both Skopje and Sofia.
“At the moment we do not have a proposal that has been harmonized by all EU member states, including Bulgaria. When such a proposal comes we will consider it. “Meanwhile, in terms of identity and language, we have a clear position that we do not discuss this issue.” said Kovacevski.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi cited the possibility of finding a solution, recalling the compromise that ended the early name stalemate between Greece and northern Macedonia.
“It is important to note how Greece and northern Macedonia managed to overcome their problem and resolve it by mutual agreement. We expect Bulgaria to make an effort and do the same. “I’m sure the talks will provide a lot of ideas on how to move forward together.”said Varhelyi.
Although some analysts think that the time is too short to close this issue until the next EU summit, the French proposal has again raised some hopes that next month there may be positive developments in terms of unblocking the integration process.
