France has announced tougher restrictions on fighting the pandemic as the Omicron variant of the coronavirus spreads.
From January 3, work from home will be mandatory for those who can and public events will be limited to 2,000 people indoors.
The news comes as France registered more than 100,000 new cases of infection on Saturday – the highest figure reported in a single day since the pandemic broke out.
However, French Prime Minister Jean Castex has not taken isolation measures for New Year’s Eve.
Countries across Europe are implementing new measures, as a result of the increase in the number of infections, driven by the Omicron variant.
Some studies have suggested that this variant is milder than Delta, and infected persons are less likely to end up in hospital.
Castex told reporters that the pandemic looks like an “endless movie”.
The French Minister of Health, Olivier Veran, has said that the rate of infection is doubling every two days, therefore he has warned of “mega waves” of new cases.
The new measures include restrictions on outside organizations with only 5,000 people, as well as bans on eating food on long-haul vehicles.
Nightclubs will remain closed and cafes will operate at limited capacity.
This state’s vaccine passport plan, which will only require proof of vaccination and not a negative test to enter public places – will take effect on January 15, if the French Parliament approves a draft law.
