Public transport prices in the public service across Spain have already been halved in response to the rapid rise in energy rates and inflation.
Now the government has announced other 100% discounts. From September, passengers will be able to travel on different trains operated by the public train network for free.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that multi-journey tickets for trains operated by public services of several short-distance networks will be free from September 1 until the end of this year.
This excludes single-trip tickets over very long distances, while multi-trip tickets include at least 10 round-trips.
CNN writes that the Spanish Ministry of Transport stated that this measure encourages the maximum use of this type of collective public transport to guarantee the necessary daily journey with a means of transport that is safe, reliable, comfortable, economical and sustainable, in the exceptional conditions of the continuous increase in energy and fuel prices.
Spain is not the only European country that has taken measures to reduce public transport costs.
Last month, Germany launched a nine-euro monthly unlimited public transport ticket that can be used on local and regional transport across the country.
The deal, part of a government energy aid package, is scheduled to last until the end of August.
At the end of 2021, Austria introduced a deeply discounted “climate ticket” valid on all modes of public transport in the country, with the aim of encouraging people to leave their cars at home.
