Russian state energy company Gazprom said it will further cut daily gas supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in Germany.
The company mentioned the “technical condition” of another turbine in the pipeline and said that from July 27 it will stop its operation.
The company said this would result in the drop to 33 million cubic meters per day – half the current amount.
Gazprom resumed the flow of gas through Nord Stream 1 last week after a 10-day maintenance outage, but only at 40 percent of the pipeline’s capacity. Russia said it was forced to reduce volume due to the delayed return of a turbine being serviced in Canada.
Germany has said the cuts are not necessary for technical reasons, but are punishment for imposing tough EU sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that continued sanctions risk causing catastrophic energy price increases for consumers around the world.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen last week accused Russia of using energy as a weapon, while warning that Europe should prepare for a possible complete cutoff of Russian gas flows.
A total shutdown of imports could result in factories shutting down and forcing households to cut back on heating or pay even higher prices.
Last year, 40 percent of the EU’s total gas imports came from Russia./REL
