German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed concern about what he called “the sign of the threatening crisis in Europe” during a press conference in the Kremlin with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Scholz said the two discussed understandably the Russian military gathering on the Ukrainian border.
“I can not stress more than we are concerned,” said Scholz.
“It is urgent to have a de-escalation so that we do not have a war in Europe,” Scholz said, adding that “diplomatic options are still there.”
Scholz said Putin and he agreed that the Normandy format was important for resolving the Ukrainian conflict. “I would not say this is lost,” he said.
“It is our duty to prevent a war in Europe,” Scholz said.
“For us Germans, but also for all Europeans, it is important that lasting security can not be achieved against Russia, but only with Russia,” said the German chancellor.
