A “hero” passenger who miraculously managed to land the plane after the driver of the vehicle lost consciousness yesterday in Florida, has been identified today as a 39-year-old local who performed the feat wearing only swords and with his knowledge as a “stylist” of home environments.
The man identified as Darren Harrison, along with a friend, were returning home after a fishing trip to the Bahamas when the pilot of their small Cessna Grand Caravan lost consciousness and remained leaning over commands.
As soon as he noticed the problem Darren called the radio for help.
“We have a serious situation here with our pilot,” the passenger turned to a pilot on the radio, according to on-board recordings.
“The pilot is unconscious, I have no idea how to fly the plane but I am holding it at 9,100,” he said.
Harrison had declined media interviews but his cousin, Matthew Harrison, said he was shocked that his relative was the author of the heroic landing.
Robert Morgan, the air traffic controller and flight instructor who had instructed Harrison during the flight and then landing, joked today that the new pilot had been “his best student.”
Morgan indicated that the pilot had lost consciousness bent over steering commands and they had pulled him to remove him from the steering wheel, in order to sit in his seat.
The instructor says he had tried hard to keep Harrison calm, showing him how to slow down and finally lower the plane.
“You’re doing very well, you’re a little fast, now grab the power command and pull back a little bit because you have to slow down,” Morgan recalls instructing Harrison.
He then indicates that the plane had disappeared from radar for nearly 10 seconds, but Harrison had spoken to him on the radio saying he had landed successfully at Palm Beach International Airport.
“It was there that my heart pounded and I said, ‘Thank God,'” Morgan said.
Glenda Watson, mike Harrison said her husband Christopher Watson, had told her about the feat.
“The ‘boss’ was forced to land a plane yesterday, even though he had never flown in his life,” Watson said.
“It surprised everyone, but it saved his life and the lives of others on board – nothing but God directed him to land the plane,” he added.
