The German government has stepped up its rhetoric in favor of mandatory coronavirus vaccination in the last two days.
German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has described compulsory vaccination as “the safest and fastest way to end the pandemic” during a speech to the Bundestag.
Lauterbach, also a qualified physician, said that “with most of the vaccinated population, we can expect to avoid serious cases, just like newer variants of the coronavirus.”
The government has set a target of 80 per cent of the population vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine by the end of the month.
Obliging to vaccinate could help protect people against the most dangerous variants that can be identified, Lauterbach said.
On Wednesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Parliament that he supports mandatory vaccination for all citizens over 18 years of age.
However, some of the coalition partners, especially the Free Democrats, are still unconvinced.
On January 12, German authorities delivered about 780,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine, or 66,000 more than on Tuesday.
Most of them were booster doses, which were taken by 37.5 million people, or 45.1 percent of the population.
The number of people vaccinated with two doses has gone up to 72.3 percent, according to data from the Institute, Robert Koch.
This Institute has reported 81,417 cases of coronavirus infection within 24 hours, or 17,000 more than a week ago.
The hospitalization rate remains stable./REL
