The most powerful industrialized countries in the world are acting with special responsibility, even if they did not cause this hunger crisis, which is worsening with the Russian war of aggression, Baerbocku said. “We act together, as G7 partners, with our international friends, while Russia, with its cynical grain war, deliberately hits food prices to destabilize entire countries.”
Blinken thanks Germany for the leading role
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken thanked Germany for its leading role in this matter. “The only reason this is happening now is Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the blockade of wheat and other food products from Russia that will be exported from Ukraine,” he said. “We are united in defending our common values. “We are united in defending human rights, democracy and international law.”
Blinken stressed that because of the war caused by Russia, another 40 million people are threatened with hunger this year.
Baerbock and Blinken spoke at an international conference on food safety. More than 50 delegations are taking part in the food security conference held in the German capital Berlin.
The conference is organized by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Development Aid. According to Baerbock, 345 million people worldwide are currently suffering from severe malnutrition. This is a situation “that is being created before us as a life-threatening wave”, she said in a joint press conference with the Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir and the Minister of Development Assistance Svenja Schulze.
Russia’s war of aggression has now “turned a wave into a tsunami,” Baerbocku said. She said 44 billion euros in emergency aid was needed. The European Commission has asked for help, but only half of it has been provided./DW
