Germany abandoned plans to honor a controversial historian with the Order of Merit following criticism from the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wanted to honor longtime Holocaust researcher Gideon Greif of Israel, who is considered a denier of the Srebrenica genocide.
More than 8,000 Bosniaks were killed during the Srebrenica genocide in July 1995 by Serb forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On the other hand, Greif was the chairman of a commission of historians who denied the genocidal nature of the Srebrenica massacre in a report compiled in July this year.
The commission was formed at the request of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tripartite presidency member Milorad Dodik.
Although mainly a Holocaust researcher, for many years Greif was a researcher in Serbia and published works which are estimated to exaggerate the number of Serbs killed during World War II, writes DPA.
The award ceremony was supposed to be held on November 10 but has been postponed due to the reconsideration of the decision.
