The German government has said it considers nuclear energy dangerous and opposes European Union (EU) proposals to keep the technology part of plans to fight climate change.
Germany will shut down the remaining three nuclear power plants by the end of this year and gradually phase out coal by 2030, while neighboring France aims to modernize existing reactors and build new ones to meet its future energy needs. Official Berlin plans to rely heavily on natural gas until it is replaced by energy sources that do not pollute the environment.
The draft EU plan, of which the Associated Press had an overview, concludes that nuclear energy and natural gas can be considered safe for investment under certain conditions. “We believe that nuclear technology is dangerous,” said German government spokesman Stephen Hebestreit, noting that the question of what to do with the radioactive waste that could last for thousands of years remained unresolved.
He added that Germany “explicitly rejects” the EU’s plans for nuclear energy. Activists have criticized Germany’s plan to use natural gas, which is better than coal, but when burned, it also emits carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas.
However, Germany claims that natural gas is just a “bridge” to alternative non-polluting solutions, the deadline for which is 2045.
