The European Union should sanction Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik for his efforts to secede from Bosnia and Herzegovina, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Monday.
Baerbock, who took over as foreign minister last week, told reporters in Brussels that the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina was “worrying” and that Dodik’s attempts to oust Republika Srpska from Bosnia were “unacceptable”.
“For me personally, this means that the existing sanctions regime should be used against Mr. Dodik,” she said after a meeting of EU foreign ministers, where she pressed for Dodik to be sanctioned.
Her comments come after the Republika Srpska Assembly on Friday (December 10th) approved a series of steps that strengthen an initiative to transfer some powers from state institutions, despite the fact that the West has warned Republika Srpska against such actions.
The United States has already imposed a travel ban on Dodik and frozen his assets. Washington has also threatened Dodik with further sanctions if he continues to undermine Bosnia’s central institutions.
The idea of the EU imposing sanctions on Dodik has the support of a majority of the bloc’s 27 members, but the decision to freeze its assets and impose travel bans must be unanimous, and such a decision is being opposed. Hungary and Slovenia.
The Bosnian war in 1992-1995 killed over 100,000 people and left millions homeless. This war is considered to be the bloodiest war in Europe since World War II.
