Germany began work on the construction of the first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Wilhelmshaven, a town and port located in Lower Saxony.
The construction is part of the country’s efforts to become independent of Russian gas due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Germany is trying to speed up the construction of the terminal in order to import liquefied natural gas from various countries, including the United States.
“We have a good chance of doing what is actually normally impossible in Germany: Build an LNG terminal in about 10 months and connect it to the German gas supply.”said German Deputy Chancellor and Minister of Economy Robert Habeck, according to CNN.
Habeck last month called for unprecedented measures to reduce Germany’s dependence on Russian gas and to counter what some German politicians call the Kremlin’s “energy blackmail.” He added that independence from Russian energy supplies is a priority for Germany.
