A 14-foot-long[14 m]humpback whale rescued from large fishing nets off the island of Mallorca has emerged dead on another Spanish beach some 300 miles[300 km]away.
A group of divers had managed to rescue the 30-ton whale by cutting trapped nets around the mouth of its body after the animal was spotted by a boat about 5km off the coast of Mallorca a week ago.
After the help given by the brave divers the whale had left seemingly satisfied, but was found stuck on a beach in Valencia at the weekend.
Specialists who had examined the whale said it was very weak and had some cuts on the spine wings.
The whale died a little later.
“It’s horrible, very sad,” said Gigi Torras, a marine biologist who was involved in the initial rescue.
“We could not push him back to sea because we would have caused more injuries and he would go back to the sand the next day,” he said, justifying the decision not to take him back to sea.
The massive nets released by fishermen to retreat a few days later harm many marine species in addition to the fish they are supposed to catch and are already illegal.
