Just 20 days before the deadline and the decision on how Greece should then pay for the natural gas it receives from Russia, Prime Minister Mitsotakis stated at an enlarged cabinet meeting that not only does the country have reservations if Moscow closes the tap for Athens, too. but it also helps other countries that depend entirely on Russian gas like neighboring Bulgaria.

According to the Minister of Energy, Greece will pay Gazprom in a way that will not violate sanctions and will guarantee the country’s energy security. So far, all possibilities for the payment of Russian gas remain open and the formulation of a single European position on this issue is expected at the meeting of Energy Ministers this Monday, at a time when foreign media have indicated that some countries and European companies use the indirect method of opening an account in euros and rubles in the Russian bank Gazprombank.
Athens’ efforts in recent days have consisted of transforming the country quickly and methodically into an energy hub for the region and at the same time a strategic gateway to energy resources in Southeast Europe.
It’s a matter of days before the completion of the Greece-Bulgaria Gas Interconnection on the Greek-Bulgarian border, which aims to complement the existing European network by bringing 3 billion cubic meters of gas a year, with an option to expand to 5 billion.

The Greek plan also includes increasing imports of liquefied natural gas LNG in Revythousa near Athens, which envisages the expansion with a floating reservoir to increase capacity to 375 thousand cubic meters and the completion in less than 20 months of the new storage terminal and liquefied natural gas processing, in the northeastern port of Alexandroupolis, a very important US-backed infrastructure project of great interest to Balkan and European countries.
