Eight Russian diplomats and members of their families, the youngest of whom is a three-year-old, have fled North Korea in a self-propelled barricade due to restrictions on the coronavirus that Pyongyang has undertaken.
The video, posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Telegram account, shows the scene as the cart, loaded with luggage and women, was pushed across a border bridge by third secretary Vladislav Rsorokin. The group greeted with hands and cheered as they traversed the final meters to their homeland, the culmination of an expedition that began with a 32-hour journey from Pyongyang, followed by a two-hour bus ride to reach the border. “It took a long time and a difficult journey to return home,” the ministry said in its post, describing why and how the group had left in the carriage.
Sorokin, the only man in the group, was the main engine of the cart and pushed it for more than a mile. Upon arrival on Russian soil they were received by colleagues from the Foreign Ministry and taken by bus to Vladivostok airport. North Korea imposed a strict border closure in January last year in a bid to protect itself from the coronavirus. This includes the cancellation of all flights to and from the country armed with nuclear weapons and hit by international sanctions. Meanwhile, cross-border trains have also been canceled. With staff and supplies unable to enter the country, some Western embassies have withdrawn all staff from there. But Russia has close ties to North Korea and maintains a significant diplomatic presence.
