A Nigerian doctor who admitted to killing a mother of three during an operation has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Dr. Isyaka Mamman pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter over the 2018 death of Shahida Parveen at Royal Oldham Hospital.
The 85-year-old, who was previously suspended for lying about his age, took the wrong medication.
According to Sky News, judges heard evidence during the hearings of how the 48-year-old lost consciousness as soon as the needle was inserted, prompting her husband to leave the room shouting:
“He killed him. I told him to stop three times and he didn’t listen.”.
Prior to the fatal incident, Mamman was responsible for a number of critical incidents, including one that left a patient disabled.
Sentencing him at Manchester Crown Court, Mrs Justice Yip said the death was his greatest crime and the hospital should have been more vigilant as he had lied about his age and failed before.
The Nigerian-born doctor’s “true age” remains a “controversial” issue, the court said, as his hometown did not have a birth registration system.
He qualified as a doctor in Nigeria in 1965 and had been working in the UK since 1991, but throughout his career, he has given a number of different dates of birth.
During his medical training, he gave a date of September 16, 1936, which meant that he was 21 years old when he began his medical training and 81 years old at the time of the fatal incident.
He later said his date of birth was 1941 and, as his time to retire approached, he changed it back to 1947.
Three years later, he was found guilty of serious professional misconduct by the General Medical Council and suspended for 12 months for misrepresenting his age.
