Protesters in Sri Lanka refused to leave President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence on Sunday after storming his home a day earlier, forcing him to flee and announce his resignation.
On Sunday morning, they took on the role of hosts and started distributing food and water to others.
Saturday’s dramatic events were the culmination of months of protests by people angered by the South Asian island nation’s unprecedented economic crisis and the incompetence and corruption of the Rajapaksa government. Hundreds of thousands of people rallied in Colombo demanding that Rajapaksa take responsibility for shortages of medicine, food and fuel that have brought the once relatively wealthy economy to its knees and caused misery for ordinary people.
