An 84-year-old man killed himself with a shotgun when the flames started to surround the apartment on Tuesday evening in the Pedeli area of Athens.
According to the civil defense, the elderly man shot himself after seeing flames surrounding the apartment.
A few minutes later, his house caught fire, but thanks to the intervention of the firemen, it was not completely burnt down. Authorities said they had warned residents in time to leave the area, but many chose not to leave their homes.
Meanwhile, on the ground, the fire front continues to burn in the Pedli, Darfi, Dhioni and Anthusa area of Attica. Hundreds of fire brigades are working to put it out, assisted by the engineering forces, the police and the staff of the municipalities in the area.
Extinguishing the fire is made difficult by the atmospheric conditions, as the wind blows with a density of 6-8 in the area.
