A man has been ordered by a court to pay his ex-wife thousands of dollars for her time of housework and childcare, during their years of marriage, in a landmark decision by divorce judges in Beijing.
The verdict has sparked a wide-ranging debate in China after the husband was ordered to pay his ex-wife 50,000 yuan for five years of unpaid housework.
The development comes after the adoption of a new civil code recently, which aims to better protect the rights of individuals.
Legislation allows people to sue their partners for compensation if they have held more responsibilities in their relationship, such as household chores.
In the case in question the man known as Mr. Chen, filed for divorce last year from his wife Ms. Wang, after they were married in 2015.
Deciding in favor of the woman, Fangshan District Court ordered Chen to pay his ex-wife 2,000 yuan every month as well as a payment of 50,000 yuan for her previous household chores.
The judge said that the division of property is done through the division of assets, while he later added: “Housework is an invariable value”.
The case has sparked a widespread debate on social media over the estimated value of household chores, with many saying it was underestimated while others applauded the decision.
“A nanny has a salary of several thousand yuan a year, so this payment is very small,” wrote one of them.
While another said: “Women should have their independence. “Do not quit your job after you get married.”
