In some rude photos from the Philippines are seen overcrowded and disease-infected prisons, where due to overcrowded capacity some of the inmates have to wait their turn for sleeping space.
The British daily TheSun writes that among them is a well-known British gangster, 44-year-old Darren Wall, arrested together with his local wife Khanary Jane Abejo, 23, after he had pulled out his pistol at a nightclub in the capital. Manila.
He was later found with several doses of cocaine on his body and a 9mm Beretta pistol, but denies the weapon was his.
Police said he was the leader of a brutal drug distribution gang and was sentenced to 18 years for drug trafficking and fines.
The Philippine capital jail was built for 800 people but now holds 3,800 inmates.
The detainees sleep in rungs on the stairs and on the floor, while a basketball court and a rocking bed are improvised as dormitories in the decades-old structure.
Prisoners bathe in the same water as their clothes, near cooking facilities in overcrowded rooms.
It holds people awaiting trial but one of the former inmates has returned there to make a documentary after studying criminal justice in the US.
Raymund Narag says that when he was 20 he was wrongly charged with murder and spent seven years in a cell with 30 other men, which was supposed to hold only seven.
During his time behind bars Raymund says he survived on dry fish and was often on the verge of starvation.
He is now an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University and has returned to his former detention center to study how institutions can be reformed.
Dr Narang says food in prison is not only inappropriate but often finds nails or cockroaches in it.
“Prisoners are infected with infectious diseases due to poor living conditions. “They sleep in overcrowded cells without ventilation, food rations are insufficient and sometimes the sick are grouped in separate cells.”
He adds that boredom and lack of sleep lead prisoners to depression and mental illness.
He has detailed his experiences in the book “Freedom and death inside the City Jail” where he describes, among other things, the dominance of corruption and bribery, as well as the torture system used in prison.
He adds that officers force prisoners to hang in bars for hours ‘like bats’, suffocate them with plastic or torture them by throwing lighted candles.
