INSTAT statistics show that during 2020 28,075 babies were born, 1.7% less compared to a year ago.
During the discussion on the show “Albania live”, the guests give different reasons, but emphasizing that the pandemic has the main impact.
Gynecologist, Mimoza Keta says that parents are afraid to give birth to a child in this period. “There have been couples who have come to visit and say as long as the pandemic passes we do not want to be born. They go to the doctor to help give birth to as many children as they want. During the pandemic period, the consultations did not fall, but there are also couples who, after being advised to get pregnant, say if I can try it after the pandemic. Most of those who come for consultations ask if the child is in danger, and so am I. At first it was said that the virus does not pass to the baby, with later studies it was said that it can be infected”.
The deputy director of the maternity hospital “Queen Geraldine”, Maksim Gjoni shows that cases when newborns have shown symptoms of Covid 19 have been few. “We have also assisted 50 patients with Covid and of these only two children have had few signs of the virus and are likely to be from the mother. But, it is true, that this period the fear is very great”.
Economics expert Arbi Agalliu points out that economic instability prevents couples from planning children during this period. “The arrival of a child today, when the demands to meet the conditions of children has increased. Couples step in because they know it’s a considerable expense. Wages have been slashed, fears about the workplace have affected”.
The doctor, Gëzim Tushi expands the topic by explaining the decrease in fertility as a global phenomenon. “It’s about a kind of modernity of society, couples today have more important goals. Today they have ideals like career, money, self-fulfillment. Using safeguards to prevent unwanted pregnancies. It is a matter of lifestyle, the time you have available for the baby. The paradox that occurs in our Albania is that more children are made by poor than rich families”.
What should be done according to him? ” We must first pursue policies to curb immigration because mostly young people are fleeing. Pursue supportive policies for those planning to have children. For example to have bonuses for children before entering the nursery”.
