The discovery of hundreds of dead birds, most of them in the small lake of Prespa, has caused great concern to the Greek authorities in Western Greece in recent days.
Specialists have concluded that the reason for this is the spread of bird flu in this area, giving the relevant instructions for protection against it.
According to authorities who have launched a major operation to collect these birds, there are more than 1000 dead pelicans in this lakewhile 60 others have been found on Lake Heimaditida and 12 IN that of Zazarit near Aminteos.
Even the army forces take part in the operation as it is about a large number of birds that must be collected and buried in certain hygienic conditions.
Also in lake of Kosturit so far two swans have been identified and over 50 pelicans dead, while checks are being carried out continuousas pelicans often move between two lakes.
With the outbreak of bird flu (H5N1) in over 40 countries, it was expected to reach Greece as well, said the head of the Florina Veterinary Service, Konstantinos Raptopoulos, Chatzistefanou, adding that at the moment there is no risk of transmission to humans. as the dead birds are located in the lake, in a remote area and have had no contact with humans, or animals and poultry.
Meanwhile, the relevant service of specialists is in readiness and monitoring of cases, in cooperation with the Managing Authority, the Defense Company and the Municipality of Prespa.
So far there are no other confirmed cases on farms in areas of western Greece, according to the services of the Ministry of Health.
