Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has arrived in Moscow to discuss gas supplies for his country, as well as to find a peaceful solution to the war in Ukraine, according to statements he made on July 21.
Szijjarto will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak.
“We have reached Moscow. We have two tasks ahead of us: to ensure that there will be natural gas for the Hungarian people, and to emphasize that we want peace as soon as possible”, said Szijjarto on his Facebook page.
Under a 15-year deal with Russian energy giant Gazprom signed last year, Hungary receives 3.5 million cubic meters of gas via Bulgaria and Serbia, as well as 1 billion cubic meters via Austria.
Szijjarto has said earlier that Hungary is interested in providing more gas before the heating season starts, as Europe tries to fill reserves after the price increase.
Szijjarto’s visit to Russia comes on the same day that the Hungarian government has announced it will lift ten-year caps on gas prices for high-spending households.
This decision implies a large increase in prices for the use of gas beyond the established rates.
These limits helped right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán secure victory in the 2014 election, and the same issue was key in April’s election, in which he secured a fourth term in power.
Orban is facing the toughest challenge since taking power in 2010, as inflation is at its highest level in two decades, the national currency forint is at record lows, and European Union funds are on hold, for due to some disagreements related to democratic standards.
